Who Founded the Brahmo Samaj?

The Brahmo Samaj was founded by Raja Ram Mohan Roy in 1828 in Calcutta (now Kolkata). He is also remembered as the Father of Indian Renaissance for his efforts in modernizing Indian society.

Other Names and Organizations Formed by Him

Founder: Raja Ram Mohan Roy

Other Organization: Atmiya Sabha (1815), which was a precursor to the Brahmo Samaj.

Newspaper: Sambad Kaumudi, published by Raja Ram Mohan Roy to spread awareness and reform ideas.

Beliefs of the Brahmo Samaj

The Brahmo Samaj stood for:

Belief in one God (monotheism)

Rejection of idol worship and caste system

Promotion of women�s education and opposition to Sati Pratha

Emphasis on rational thinking and social reform

Division of the Brahmo Samaj

The Brahmo Samaj later divided into two groups:

Adi Brahmo Samaj � led by Debendranath Tagore

Brahmo Samaj of India � led by Keshab Chandra Sen

This division was due to differences in views and reforms.
